Buying your plane

You may decide to buy your entire plane online or from your local hobby shop. I used both. After using this blog, you should be able to negotiate a complete plane package from your local hobby shop. You may even get a club discount.

If you enjoy building planes, then the extra costs are part of your hobby. If not, look for a second hand Boomerang or new RTF ( Ready to Fly) Trainer. It will cost a lot less.

The Boomerang is sold as an ARF (Almost Ready to Fly), however you will need to buy a lot more items to convert this into a RFT. The total cost of my Boomerang can be found here. I bought my plane, engine and servos online as the postage was free over $200. The website rewards you with points to discount your next purchase. It is easy to compare products, review items and find support documents.

Your local hobby shop may sponsor your club, or provide discounts to club members. This may not necessarily work out any cheaper for you. I always say a successful business understands that a returning customer makes you money in the long run. A hobby shop trying to make a quick buck will loose customers to the web. (Especially the younger tech savy generation) The owner of your local hobby shop needs to know their planes and encourage their customers to value their experience. Buying the wrong parts that are not compatible can be expensive and time consuming.

Getting defensive about using social media for promotions or online shops will just drive customers away.

I would suggest researching all your options, which include a variety of stores. You are welcome to use my spreadsheet to help work out your future costs.

It is possible to reduce costs if you hand start your plane and charge your receiver battery with your transmitter transformer. It will take a very long time to charge the battery. I can not afford to injure my fingers as they valuable to my type of work. This would save you about $160 AU. I upgraded my landing gear and a few other items as recommended by other websites and reviews.

Happy shopping.
